PDP rejects Lamido’s call for dissolution of national working committee

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the call by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido urging the dissolution of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), describing his position as unacceptable and contrary to the party’s constitution.
Lamido had recently criticised the current NWC, alleging incompetence and calling for its immediate disbandment to pave the way for a caretaker committee. However, senior PDP leaders insist that the NWC, led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, remains legally constituted and cannot be dissolved based on personal opinions.
Party officials argued that Lamido’s comments risk deepening internal tensions at a time when the PDP is focused on reconciliation and repositioning ahead of future elections. They stressed that any changes to the party’s leadership structure must follow due process and be decided collectively by authorised organs such as the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The PDP maintained that the NWC continues to carry out its duties and will remain in place until the party’s constitutional provisions mandate otherwise. Senior members also urged stakeholders to refrain from public statements capable of undermining unity.
The party reiterated its commitment to strengthening internal democracy and resolving grievances through established mechanisms rather than unilateral demands.
