Plateau Killings: Gov. Mutfwang declares one-week mourning period, calls for prayers

In response to the tragic events in the North-Central State, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially declared a one-week mourning period.

The governor announced the decision during a New Year broadcast, expressing deep sorrow for the loss of approximately 200 lives and numerous injuries in separate attacks over the past two weeks.

During this week of mourning, which spans from January 1st to January 8th, 2024, flags across the state will fly at half-mast as a mark of respect for the departed.

Governor Mutfwang urged citizens to utilise this time for fervent prayers, seeking divine intervention against those who have posed a threat to their territories.

Additionally, religious leaders have been called upon to conduct special prayers for peace on specific dates.

Muslim clerics are requested to dedicate Friday, January 5th, 2024, while Christian clerics are to observe Sunday, January 7th, 2024, as special prayer days for lasting peace to return to Plateau State.

The official state day of mourning is set for Monday, January 8th, 2024.

The recent attacks in the North-Central State have elicited widespread condemnation and calls for an investigation.

President Bola Tinubu has already called for an inquiry, and Vice President Kashim Shettima visited the affected communities to assess the situation.

Plateau State, like other regions in central and northwest Nigeria, has been grappling with the menace of bandit militias, exacerbating social tensions and violence.

The competition for natural resources between nomadic herders and farmers has further intensified these conflicts.
