Wike declares public holiday, movement restriction ahead of FCT council elections
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and announced a restriction of movement across the territory in preparation for the upcoming Area Council elections.
In a special nationwide broadcast on Thursday, the minister disclosed that movement within the FCT would be restricted from 8 p.m. on Friday until 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process.
The announcement was conveyed in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka. Wike called on residents to participate actively in the elections, describing the exercise as a defining moment for the territory.

“On Saturday, February 21, we will all have a crucial opportunity to shape the future of our great Federal Capital Territory,” he said. “The election of Chairmen and Councillors for the six Area Councils is a momentous occasion, and I urge you to come out in your numbers to exercise your right to vote.”
He appealed to voters to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly, emphasizing respect for the law, fellow citizens, and the eventual outcome of the polls.
Wike explained that both the public holiday and the movement restriction were approved by President Bola Tinubu to allow residents travel to their communities and to safeguard the credibility of the elections.

“With the approval of President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, I hereby declare Friday, February 20, 2026, as a Work-Free Day to enable residents to move to their various communities to participate in the elections,” he stated.
He added that security agencies have been directed to enforce strict compliance with the movement restriction across the FCT during the specified period.
The minister also commended President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, noting that the move underscores the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections.

Reaffirming his message to residents, Wike urged them to turn out in large numbers on election day and vote for candidates of their choice.
“Our prayer as an administration is that the elections will produce quality leaders who will contribute meaningfully to development, peace, and prosperity in the FCT,” he said. “Together, let us build a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and our territory.”
