Police arrest 30-year-old man for defiling 7-year-old girl

A 30-year-old man has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command over the alleged rape of a 7-year-old girl in Awka, Anambra State.

The suspect, identified as Chinonso Ezekiel Nwaebonyi, hails from Izzi in Ebonyi State was nabbed after the mother of the victim reported the incident to the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.

Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the Women and Social Welfare Commissioner disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

She said the 7-year-old girl has a twin brother and she alongside her twin brother, usually go over to the next compound to play since the holiday started before the suspect started defiling her.

She revealed that the suspect allegedly had carnal knowledge of her about 5 times.

The statement further revealed that the victim’s mother got to know about the incident when she came back from work to bathe her kids and discovered that her daughter’s private region was swollen.

On inquiry, she was told about what had been going on and she quickly went to the next compound to complain to the guardians of the suspect and took her daughter to a pharmacy before coming to the ministry.

Upon arrest, the suspect, who had earlier denied the allegation, later confessed to committing the said crime but only once.

According to the suspect, he never forced the girl but only asked her to raise her clothes and lie down on the ground.

The suspect is already in police custody and will be charged to court.
