Police, Civil Defence clash in Ebonyi, leaving one dead, others injured

A violent clash between officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ebonyi State’s Amaeze community has resulted in the death of one police officer and injuries to several others.

The Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area, Emmanuel Ajah, confirmed the incident, stating he was briefed by the local Divisional Police Officer. “I was informed by the DPO that there was a clash involving the police and civil defence officers in the Amaeze community, and unfortunately, one police officer lost his life in the process,” Ajah said.

According to unnamed community eyewitnesses, the deceased officer, identified as Shedrack, may have been a victim of friendly fire.

The confrontation reportedly began when three police Toyota Hilux vans, carrying about 30 officers, intercepted and opened fire on an NSCDC vehicle transporting mining equipment.

Witnesses claim that during the chaos, Shedrack tried to disarm an NSCDC operative but was mistakenly hit by bullets from his own colleagues. He died instantly, and other officers were injured.

The deceased’s body has been taken to a morgue, and the injured are being treated at a local hospital. As of now, neither the Ebonyi State Police Command nor the NSCDC has released an official statement.

Attempts to contact the Police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, were unsuccessful.
