Police probe woman’s alleged suicide over forced marriage

The Borno State Police Command has launched an investigation into reports that a young woman in Gubio Local Government Area allegedly took her own life after being forced into marriage.

According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has ordered a discreet investigation to verify the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the incident.

Daso urged anyone with credible information to assist the police, adding that the Command is determined to uncover the truth. He also cautioned the public against spreading unverified news that could cause panic or mislead others.

The police reminded residents that sharing false information is punishable under the Cybercrimes Act of 2015.

Meanwhile, a local child protection volunteer, Bukar Fantami Gubio, called on human rights groups and authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and justice for the victim. He stressed that forced marriages violate women’s rights and dignity.

The incident has sparked outrage across Borno, with many community members demanding action to prevent similar tragedies.
