Professor slumps, dies during departmental meeting

A professor at Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, has tragically passed away while attending departmental meeting.

The deceased, identified as Olanipekun Famakinwa, who was a professor in the Department of Philosophy in Ile-Ife, Osun State was reported to have fallen ill during a meeting in the school.

Confirming the incident, the management, through its PRO, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the school noted that Famakinwa fell ill during a departmental meeting, and was rushed to the school’s Health and Medical Centre.

From the school clinic, he was referred to the OAU Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, where he was confirmed dead by doctors on duty.

Members of the school management, as well as concerned students paid condolences visit to the deceased’s wife and children.

The statement partly read,“The entire academic community of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a Professor in the Department of Philosophy.

“Professor Jimoh Olanipekun FAMAKINWA who was, during a departmental meeting this morning, (Wednesday, 5th day of March, 2025), was noticed breathing “abnormally” by his colleagues and was immediately rushed to the University Health and Medical Centre.

“Upon prompt medical examination by the team of doctors on duty, he was referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), also in Ile-Ife, where he was pronounced B.I.D.

“The corpse has been deposited at the Department of Anatomy of the University.”
