A dental student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has reportedly taken his own life, a tragic event confirmed by the Obafemi Awolowo University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA). The student’s death, which occurred shortly after the release of exam results, has sent a wave of grief through the university community.

In a statement signed by its president, Adebayo Idris, IFUDSA expressed its profound sadness. “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry.

We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of examination results,” the statement read. Idris described the deceased as a promising young mind, noting that his passing is a painful reminder of the “silent battles” many students face.

The association is now urging students to look out for one another and seek help when needed.

“We encourage all members of our faculty to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles,” the statement said.

IFUDSA has also committed to boosting its student welfare and mental health advocacy efforts to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
This is not the first time OAU has experienced such a loss. In 2021, a 200-level accounting student named Emmanuel died after ingesting pesticide, having confided in friends about his intentions. In 2019, Opeyemi Grace Dara, an English and Literature student, also reportedly took her own life with pesticide.

While initial reports linked her death to her academic results, the school later clarified that her grades were not poor enough to be the cause.
