PSC dismisses 19 senior police officers, demotes 19
Two Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) have been penalised for acts of indiscipline, the Police Service Commission (PSC) announced on Friday, December 6, 2024.
The PSC disclosed that one officer received a reprimand for failing to execute lawful instructions, while the other was issued a letter of warning for negligence. However, the identities of the two AIGs were not revealed.
The decisions were made during the Commission’s first Plenary Meeting in Abuja, which also saw the dismissal of 19 senior officers. Among those dismissed were ten Assistant Superintendents, four Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent. Additionally, 19 other senior officers had their ranks reduced. One Assistant Commissioner of Police, one Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and thirteen Assistant Superintendents were all affected by this measure.
Other officers found guilty faced various levels of punishment, including severe reprimands, reprimands, and letters of warning. Many of those dismissed will also face prosecution by the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commission further reported that three pending disciplinary cases were postponed, pending additional information from the Inspector General of Police.

The PSC also reviewed 23 appeals, petitions, and nine legal matters, including court judgments, during the meeting. PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu, emphasized the need for swift and decisive actions on disciplinary matters, assuring that officers found not guilty would be allowed to continue their career progression while those found guilty would face appropriate punishments.
DIG Argungu also warned officers against involving themselves in civil disputes, such as land issues, marital problems, and rent disputes, advising that such matters should be left to the courts.
He emphasized that the police should focus more on criminal matters and threats to life rather than civil issues.
