Public outcry as Sokoto renames road after Seyi Tinubu

Sokoto state governor, Ahmad Aliyu, faces public backlash for renaming a road in the state after Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.

The road, formerly known as “Pepsi Road,” was set to be commissioned on Jun 3 by Katsina state governor, Umaru Dikko Radda, but the event was postponed.

A photo of the newly renamed road, “Seyi Ahmed Bola Tinubu Road,” circulated on social media, prompting criticism over the decision.

Residents argue that the governor had no valid reason for the renaming, as Mr. Tinubu has not contributed significantly to Sokoto or Nigeria at large.

“The governor overlooked many distinguished indigenes of Sokoto and instead named a road after the president’s son, who is not even from Sokoto or the northern region,” expressed Salisu Ahmadu, a resident, to Peoples Gazette.

Social media users also voiced their disapproval, with one stating, “This is how @Ahmedaliyuskt is denigrating the name of Sokoto with his lack of capacity and sheepishness.”

Another user commented, “Even Lagos didn’t name a road after Seyi Tinubu, but Sokoto governor must impress Tinubu.”

Despite attempts to reach Abubakar Bawa, spokesperson for Sokoto governor, for comments, no response was received.

While Mr. Seyi Tinubu holds no official government position, he has been influential in the APC and has accompanied his father on foreign trips. However, he was recently barred from attending the Federal Executive Council meeting.

The renaming of the road after Mr. Tinubu in Sokoto State has sparked debate, with many questioning the criteria for such a decision and its implications for local identity and representation.
