Rafsanjani advocates for African economic liberation

Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, a prominent Nigerian civil rights activist and Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), has urged African nations to take control of their economic liberation instead of depending on Western intervention.

Speaking at the recently concluded 2024 IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting, Rafsanjani described this reliance as a form of deception.

He emphasized that Africa has abundant resources and capabilities vital for driving positive development.

He highlighted the necessity of achieving sustainable development goals and advancing the African agenda through a commitment to good governance, transparency, and accountability.

Rafsanjani stated that corruption severely undermines development and limits funding for social services, making it crucial for African leaders to effectively combat corrupt practices.

At the meeting, he urged African leaders and stakeholders to work together to eradicate poverty, which he referred to as “artificial poverty.”

Rafsanjani advocated for improving taxation systems to increase revenue and emphasized the importance of committing to global development frameworks, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He also highlighted the need for greater involvement of African nations in discussions and decision-making processes at the IMF and World Bank, pointing out the current lack of equitable representation.

In conclusion, he called for unity among African nations to demand significant participation in their economic affairs and to tackle the burdensome debts that impede economic progress, ultimately promoting a more productive and self-sufficient Africa.
