Residents in shock as police uncover social-media sex trafficking syndicate, rescue 15 young women

Residents of Akure, Ondo State, were thrown into shock as operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the state police command busted a notorious sex-trafficking ring that lured unsuspecting young women under the pretense of job opportunities, ushering roles, and social media content creation.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers stormed a residential apartment in the Alagbaka area of Akure, where 15 victims, aged between 20 and 26, were rescued. The building was reportedly being used as the syndicate’s operational base.
Police spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, who confirmed the operation in a statement on Sunday, said the principal suspect, Jayeola Joshua, and two of his accomplices were arrested during the sting operation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims had been recruited from different parts of Nigeria with promises of legitimate employment and even offers of work abroad. However, upon arrival in Akure, they were allegedly coerced into producing explicit images and videos that were later sold to online clients under the guise of social media “relationship content.”
“The suspects used social media platforms to deceive victims and operate discreetly while profiting from the illicit trade,” the police stated.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, has ordered that the landlord of the property used for the illegal business be interrogated, as the investigation continues to track down other fleeing members of the network.

Police authorities warned members of the public to be cautious of enticing online job advertisements and urged parents to verify any employment claims before allowing their children to travel for work.
“The command appreciates the public’s cooperation in intelligence gathering and urges continued vigilance and information sharing to curb such crimes in the state,” the statement added.
