Rise against bandits, Gov. Radda urges Katsina residents

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umar Radda, has called on residents to take proactive steps in defending themselves against the ongoing banditry attacks affecting the state. Speaking at a town hall meeting titled “Public Engagement: 2025 Citizens’ Budget Participation Process” in Daura Zone, Governor Radda expressed his concern over the increasing insecurity.
A video from the meeting, which quickly went viral across social media platforms, captured the governor’s passionate appeal to Islamic scholars. He urged them to enlighten the public about self-defence, a concept supported by Islamic teachings. “It is unfortunate that a few bandits can raid and terrorise entire communities,” Governor Radda stated, adding, “Even these bandits are afraid of death.”
He pointed out that the number of rifles in the hands of bandits operating in Katsina is relatively small, suggesting that the fear they instill is disproportionate. “Three famished bandits can chase 1,000 people, and we simply hide under our beds,” he lamented.
Addressing the clergy, Governor Radda asked, “What did God command you to do if a robber comes for your life or wealth?” He emphasized the need for a united resistance against bandit incursions, urging communities to confront bandits head-on rather than surrender to fear and intimidation.
The governor stressed the shame of watching helplessly as loved ones suffer violence, stating that “death is more honourable than some kinds of humiliation.” He also noted that bandits tend to avoid communities that are known to resist them.

This is not the first time Governor Radda has called for self-defence. A similar plea was made in February, and more recently, his Commissioner for Internal Security, Dr Nasiru Muazu Danmusa, echoed the call for citizens to take a stand against the bandits threatening their peace.
As the banditry crisis continues, Governor Radda’s message is clear: citizens must not only rely on government forces but must also take matters into their own hands when necessary, to protect their lives and property.
