Senate confirms Tinubu’s new service chiefs, vows support for battle against insecurity

Story by Mercy Adaje

The Senate on Wednesday screened and confirmed the new Service Chiefs appointed by President Bola Tinubu, pledging full legislative support for their mission to end insecurity across the country.

Those confirmed include Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major General W. Shuaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff.

Their confirmation followed a motion moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central), urging the chamber to consider the president’s request in line with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act. The Senate thereafter dissolved into a Committee of the Whole to screen the nominees.

Before the closed-door session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio invited the Chief of Defence Staff-designate, Lieutenant General Oluyede, to make brief remarks. Oluyede emphasized the need for Nigeria to develop its own local military-industrial complex to reduce dependence on expensive foreign equipment.

He also stressed the importance of countering misinformation and improving the welfare of military personnel and their families.

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General W. Shuaibu, highlighted plans to leverage technology to enhance night combat capabilities and train additional special forces to dominate all terrains. He also pledged to prioritize troop welfare.

Senator Isah Jibrin (Kogi East) commended the president for Shuaibu’s appointment, describing him as a dedicated and highly experienced officer who would strengthen the fight against insecurity.
