Senators clash over seating arrangements as renovated chamber reopens

Tensions ran high on Tuesday as Senators returned to the main chamber of the National Assembly following its long-awaited renovation.

The chamber had been under construction for years, forcing Senators to conduct business in a temporary hall during that time.

As the Senators settled into their new seats after a 40-day recess, disagreements arose over seating arrangements.

Senator Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u of APC Zamfara North expressed his discomfort with the seat assigned to him, leading to a heated exchange with Majority Leader Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele of APC Ekiti Central.

The dispute escalated when Senator Danjuma Goje of APC Gombe Central joined in, arguing that the seating placements did not adequately reflect the status of ranking Senators.

The tension prompted Senate President Godswill Akpabio to intervene and call for calm before delivering his opening remarks.

The situation eventually prompted the Senators to convene an emergency executive session to address the issues at hand.
