Shettima to represent Nigeria at 80th UN general assembly in New York

Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which runs from Monday, 22 September to Sunday, 28 September 2025, in New York, USA.

The appointment comes on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President.

Shettima is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, 24 September, a key moment when the country will outline its priorities on the international stage.

On the same day, the Vice President will also attend a special climate event for Heads of State and Government, convened by the UN Secretary-General, during which Nigeria is expected to announce its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Another significant engagement for Shettima will be a high-level roundtable on Adequate and Affordable Housing, hosted by the President of Kenya. This will run alongside a host of bilateral meetings and side events during the UNGA.

Observers expect Shettima to use the platform to focus on Nigeria’s stance on climate action, economic recovery, housing, and security, particularly as global challenges like climate change, regional conflicts, and economic instability face many developing nations.

Following the conclusion of activities in New York, the Vice President is scheduled to travel to Frankfurt, Germany, for a meeting with officials of Deutsche Bank, as part of efforts to deepen economic and investment ties.

Nigeria’s leadership will be keen to leverage the UNGA to attract foreign investment, secure climate finance, and strengthen international cooperation in sectors such as energy and infrastructure.
