Sowore arrives at force headquarters in Abuja

Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and publisher, arrived at the Force Intelligence Department Headquarters in Abuja on Monday morning for questioning by the police.

Sowore, who arrived at 9:58 a.m., had been invited by the police following his release of a viral video that accused officers of extortion at a checkpoint in Lagos.

The police summoned Sowore to address a series of allegations, including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobeying lawful orders, cyberstalking, and attempting to prevent arrests.

The invitation letter from the Force Intelligence Department outlined these charges, which it said were connected to a case in which Sowore’s name had been prominently mentioned. The letter requested him to report to the Deputy Inspector General of Police at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 10 a.m.

In response to the summons, the Take It Back Movement circulated a flier on social media calling for a protest against police extortion at the Force Headquarters. The flier, which featured images of Sowore and the Inspector General of Police, urged supporters to “Occupy Force Headquarters,” and quickly gained attention on X (formerly Twitter).

By early Monday, roads around the Force Headquarters were blocked off by heavily armed officers in anti-riot gear, likely as a precautionary measure against the anticipated protest.

As of the time of this report, Sowore was still inside the Force Intelligence Department for his interview, with the situation outside remaining tense but manageable.
