Non-academic staff of the University of Ibadan under the aegis of Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) on Monday commenced a 14-day warning strike.

The unions warned upon the lapse of the warning strike, members would embark on an indefinite strike, should the federal government fails to accede to its demands.

The warning strike lapses on 19 October.

According to the striking staff, a full-blown strike will see workers entirely withdraw their services from critical departments like Jaja clinic, teaching and research farm, a zoological garden among others.

The members who converged for a congress at UI resolved to write the national body that if a full-blown strike is declared, it should not be called off until the Federal Government attends to all its demands.

Addressing the congress, UI SSANU chairman, Mr Wale Akinremi who was accompanied by his NASU counterpart, Mr Malachy Etim, urged the Federal Government to meet with the non-academic union within the 14 days of the warning strike to address all its lingering issues.

He said issues being contested are inconsistencies of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) in the payment of salaries to the Unions members; non-payment of arrears of Earned Allowances being owed NASU and SSANU members; non-payment arrears of National Minimum wage and usurpation of the headship of non-teaching units by Academic staff.

Others include non-payment of retirement benefits to outgone members; lack of seriousness and delay by the government in the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU and SSANU Agreement; neglect and poor funding of state universities; corruption in the university system and non-constitution of Visitation Panels for universities.
