State governments tasked to adopt fiscal responsibility laws for good governance

Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), Chief Victor Muruako, has urged state governments to adopt the Fiscal Responsibility Law to ensure transparency and accountability for good governance.

Muruako made the call in Yola during a three-day awareness and sensitisation workshop on transparency and accountability for the North-East zone.

The theme of the workshop is “Sustaining the Gains of Fiscal Transparency and Accountability in States”.

Muruako said that the programme is in alignment with the commission’s mission to promote prudent and transparent fiscal management in Nigeria.

“Being conscious of the fact that Nigeria operates a single macro economy, we consider it our priority to ensure that states continue to improve their quality of fiscal governance through the honest use of transparency, accountability, and sustainability.

“We need not be told that the global economy is experiencing trial and the Nigeria economy is not in isolation. There are challenges and we all know it”, he said.

He appealed to participants to feel free and be open-minded during the workshop to ensure success for their respective states and the country at large.

In his remarks, Muhammad Mustapha, commissioner, Ministry of Finance, Yobe State thanked and appreciated the FRC for organising the workshop.

Mustapha who was represented by Mr Fashuwe Jajere said that the workshop will go a long way to promoting prudent management of resources.

According to him, most of the states do not have financial management bodies, so they engaged consultants. He assured to adopt whatever may be the outcome of the meeting.

Alhaji Muhammad Bakari, Chairman Adamawa Fiscal Responsibility Commission, applauded the commitment of the federal government to promoting prudent management.

He expressed the importance of FRC being an independent body for more development and urged participants to take advantage of the workshop.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mrs Aishatu Margin said the workshop came at the right time and assured of effective implementation of the knowledge gathered to promote transparency and accountability.
