Supreme Court Justice Musa Dattijo announces retirement from bench
Musa Dattijo, a sitting justice of the Supreme Court, is set to retire from the bench on Friday, October 27.
This announcement was made in an official statement by the spokesperson of the apex court, Festus Akande, on Sunday, October 22.
Dattijo’s retirement follows the departure of Justice Amina Augie in September 2023 and the sad passing of Justice Chima Nweze in July of the same year.
With this development, the Supreme Court will have only 10 justices, falling short of the 21 justices stipulated by Section 230(2) of the 1999 Constitution.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, is expected to preside over the retirement session, where he and other prominent figures in the nation’s justice sector will pay tribute to Justice Dattijo.
This event is scheduled to take place in the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Justice Musa Dattijo, a native of Chanchaga local government area in Niger State, was born in Minna on October 27, 1953.
He assumed the position of Supreme Court Justice on July 10, 2012. His legal career took him through various significant roles, as he was elevated to the Court of Appeal on November 21, 1998, after a commendable service in the Niger State Judiciary.

His educational journey began with his basic education at the Native Authority School in Minna from 1960 to 1966, followed by secondary school at Shelkh Sabbah College (now Sardauna Memorial Secondary School) in Kaduna from 1967 to 1971.
He then pursued a pre-degree certificate at Abdullahi Bayero College (now Bayero University) in Kano from 1972 to 1973.
Justice Dattijo earned his LLB (Hons) at Ahmadu Bello University (Faculty of Law) in Zaria from 1973 to 1976, and subsequently completed his BL at the Nigerian Law School in 1977.
He furthered his legal studies with an LLM at Warwick University in Coventry, UK, from 1982 to 1983, and also obtained an Institute of Advanced Certificate in Practice Procedure.
