Troost-Ekong: Eagles only want unpaid allowances cleared Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has dismissed reports that the national team boycotted training in demand for a special bonus ahead of the 2026 World Cup African playoffs. In a post on Tuesday, Ekong clarified that the players only suspended training to protest the non-payment of outstanding allowances and bonuses by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). He was reacting to media claims that the team had requested an increase in their match bonuses for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. According to reports, the players and officials refused to take part in their scheduled evening training session on Tuesday in Rabat, Morocco, in protest over unpaid entitlements. Sources revealed that the players are yet to receive allowances for qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 World Cup playoffs, while some senior squad members are still owed bonuses dating back to 2019. All 24 players invited by head coach Eric Chelle are currently in camp in Rabat, but they are not expected to resume training until the matter is resolved. Ekong stressed that the team’s main concern is for the issue to be quickly addressed so they can focus fully on their crucial semi-final clash against Gabon on Thursday
