Taraba IDPs beg to return home after 2 years of homelessness 

Some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Taraba State have appealed to the state Governor, Darius Ishaku to ensure their safety as they plan to return and resettle in their ancestral communities two years after being homeless due to the Jukun/Tiv crisis.

The IDPs made the appeal in a communiqué issued at the end of the 4th Tiv Traditional Supreme Council (Ijir Tamen) meeting held in Bali, Taraba State.

The communiqué read in part, “The council frowns on the crises in some parts of the state, especially as they affect the Tiv people.

“The unfortunate crises have forced thousands of people to become homeless in the past two years. This development is retrogressive, unfortunate and has retarded the development of the affected areas and the state in general.

The council, which appreciated the efforts of Governor Ishaku in ensuring peace and stability in the state, called on him to look into the crisis brewing in some parts of the state and ensure the safe return of displaced persons.

“Council appeals to Governor Darius Ishaku to look into the crisis in the Wukari Local Government Area and the Suntai Chiefdom specifically and ensure the resettlement of the people of the affected areas to continue with their normal lives.”

The council further urged the people to play active roles in politics and tolerate one another to ensure sustainable development in the state, while calling all eligible voters to register and obtain the permanent voter card as the only power they have to elect leaders of their choice.
