Teacher arrested for sexually abusing student for 5 years

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 42-year-old school teacher Gbolahan Osinusi for allegedly sexually abusing a female student.

Osinusi is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with the student for five years, starting when she was just 12 years old, and coercing her into multiple abortions after impregnating her.

A nurse named Mariam Fatolu, who allegedly performed the abortions, is currently at large, and police have initiated a manhunt for her.

Lagos State Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest and noted that the defilement case was transferred from the FESTAC police station to the gender unit in Ikeja on September 30, 2024.

The complainant, who is also the girl’s guardian at a school in the Ketu-Epe area, reported that the abuse continued until December 2023, when the girl turned 17.

The complainant further stated that Osinusi forced the girl to swear an oath of silence, threatening her life if she revealed the abuse.

“He also took the girl to a nurse named Mariam Fatolu to administer abortion drugs whenever she became pregnant,” Hundeyin stated.

He confirmed that the suspect has already been charged in court.

A report indicates that in Nigeria, six out of ten children experience some form of physical, sexual, or emotional violence before they turn 18. More than 70 percent of these children endure repeated incidents of violence, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

In 2019, the Nigerian government launched its first National Sex Offenders Register to publicly name and shame individuals convicted of rape and other forms of violence against persons. Several states, including Delta, Ogun, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Adamawa, Abia, and Kaduna, also maintain their own sex offender registers.

Additionally, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has been publishing the names and photos of convicted sex offenders. Ekiti State also keeps a similar register. While Lagos began publishing offenders’ names in 2022, its register has been active since 2014.
