Tinubu pays tribute to fallen soldiers, hails military response
President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the Nigerian military and the families of the six soldiers who tragically lost their lives during a terrorist attack on January 4, 2025.
The assault occurred at the Nigerian Army base in Sabon Gida, Damboa, Borno State.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the courage and sacrifice of the fallen soldiers. He stated, “Their sacrifice in defending our nation will forever be honoured and remembered,” emphasizing the nation’s deep gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for national security.
President Tinubu also praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their swift and decisive response to the attack. He noted the effectiveness of the air component’s retaliatory strikes, saying, “This resolute action by the Army demonstrates the capability and readiness of our military to confront and defeat threats to our nation’s security.” These air raids successfully neutralized numerous terrorists and destroyed their assets as they attempted to flee.
Acknowledging the significant challenges faced by the military, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and banditry, vowing unwavering support for the armed forces. “Your sacrifices and dedication do not go unnoticed, and we stand firmly behind you in this ongoing fight to eliminate these threats,” he added.
Following the attack, President Tinubu has called for a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident, stressing that lessons must be learned to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He also urged the military to intensify operations, particularly in the Northwest, where bandits continue to pose a danger to innocent villagers.
The President appealed to Nigerians, including the media, to rally behind the military’s efforts to restore peace and stability across the nation. “We must remain united in our resolve to support our armed forces as they work tirelessly to protect our people and secure our nation,” he concluded.
The dawn assault on the Sabon Gida army base resulted in the deaths of six soldiers but was met with a powerful counterattack from the Nigerian Armed Forces, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining national security in the face of evolving threats.
