Tinubu reaffirms January 2026 rollout for new tax regime

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws will be fully implemented from January 1, 2026, in line with the original timeline.

In a statement personally signed on Tuesday, the President said all components of the tax reform package — including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and others scheduled to begin in 2026 — would proceed as planned.

Tinubu described the reforms as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to establish a fair, competitive and resilient fiscal framework for the country. He explained that the new laws were not introduced to increase tax burdens but to achieve a structural overhaul, promote harmonisation and protect citizens’ dignity, while strengthening the social contract.

The President called on all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, noting that the reform agenda had moved decisively into the delivery stage.

Addressing public debate over alleged amendments to some provisions of the tax laws, Tinubu said no significant issue had emerged to justify halting or altering the reform process.

“No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process. Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” he said.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and the sanctity of enacted laws, assuring that the Presidency would collaborate with the National Assembly to swiftly resolve any concerns that may arise.

Tinubu also assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to act in the broader public interest to deliver a tax system that promotes prosperity, fairness and shared responsibility.
