Tragedy averted as Kano-bound Rano air flight develops engine failure mid-air

Story by Zara Ahmed

A potentially catastrophic aviation incident was averted when a Rano Air flight from Sokoto to Kano experienced engine failure mid-air, but managed to avoid disaster.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) reported that the aircraft, with registration 5N-BZY, developed an engine issue accompanied by smoke in the cabin and cockpit.

The crew immediately initiated safety protocols, deploying oxygen masks for passengers and coordinating with air traffic control to ensure a safe landing.
The pilot successfully brought the aircraft down in Sokoto without further incident.

NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu confirmed that the aircraft has been grounded pending investigation.

He emphasised that passenger safety remains the authority’s top priority. Passengers described moments of panic as the cabin filled with smoke, though no injuries were reported.
