Tragedy in Benue as six students die in boat accident
At least six students have lost their lives following a tragic boat mishap in Benue State, sparking grief and shock across the affected communities.
The incident occurred when the boat conveying the students capsized while they were crossing a river to their destination. Eyewitnesses said the vessel was overloaded and struggled against strong currents before it overturned, throwing all occupants into the water.

Local residents and fishermen reportedly rushed to the scene to rescue the victims, but six of the students drowned before help could reach them. Others were rescued and are currently receiving medical attention at nearby health facilities.
Authorities confirmed the incident and described it as deeply unfortunate. Preliminary reports suggest poor safety measures and possible overloading as contributing factors to the tragedy.
Community leaders and residents have called on the government to improve water transport safety, including the enforcement of life jacket use and regulation of boat operations, to prevent future occurrences.
