Trump withdraws US from World Health Organization

On Monday, January 20, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would be withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO) due to its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health crises.

Trump criticized the WHO for what he called its failure to act independently and its “unfairly onerous payments” required from the US.

In his statement, Trump said, “World Health ripped us off, everybody rips off the United States. It’s not going to happen anymore.” He also accused the WHO of being influenced by the political agendas of its member states.

Dr. Ashish Jha, who served as White House COVID-19 response coordinator under the Biden administration, labeled the decision a “strategic error.” He expressed concern that the US withdrawal would create a power vacuum that China could exploit, thereby gaining greater global political influence.

“WHO is a crucial organization — and with America’s withdrawal, it creates a political vacuum that only one country can fill — and that is China,” Jha warned.
