UN seeks new ceasefire resolution as Israel/Hamas ‘devastating’ battle resumes

The United Nations General Assembly is preparing to vote on a new ceasefire resolution as Israeli forces engage in battle with Hamas militants and conduct airstrikes in the heavily damaged Gaza Strip.

The situation is characterised as dire, with the chief of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees comparing Gaza to “hell on earth.”

Israeli forces have been actively combating Hamas militants in the devastated Gaza Strip, and the UN General Assembly is set to vote on a new ceasefire demand to mitigate the situation.

Philippe Lazzarini, the visiting chief of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, has likened the current state of Gaza to “hell on earth.” The death toll, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, has reached 18,412, with a significant number being women and children.

Hamas alleges that Israeli forces raided the Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza City, the largest urban centre, accusing them of besieging and bombing the facility.

The situation is dire, with reports of extreme shortages of water, food, and power, leaving around 3,000 internally displaced people trapped in the hospital.

The conflict, which began with Hamas’s October 7 attacks, has resulted in widespread destruction, prompting concerns from UN agencies and aid groups about the potential for starvation and disease.

The UN estimates that 1.9 million out of Gaza’s 2.4 million population have been displaced, with the situation drawing comparisons to the devastation seen in Germany during World War II.

The conflict continues to escalate, with fears of a broader regional impact.

The UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote on a non-binding resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, as international pressure mounts on Israel to address the crisis.
