Unlawful Detention: Family urges DSS to release citizen Idris Yahaya

The family of Idris Yahaya, a young Nigerian detained since January 2024, has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to release him unconditionally, citing unlawful detention and prolonged silence on his whereabouts.

A statement released by Yahaya Otaru, a family representative, expressed the family’s distress over the ten-month disappearance of Idris, which has left his community in Felele, Lokoja, deeply troubled.

Yahaya was reportedly detained on 18th January, and his family has since been denied any information regarding his detention or status, raising concerns over potential human rights abuses.

Otaru emphasised that the DSS’s actions are “unacceptable in a democratic setting” and urged the agency to uphold its primary duty of safeguarding citizens, not detaining them without trial.

“Idris was a young man with a bright future. His unexplained detention has brought emotional and financial hardship to his loved ones, who remain in agonising uncertainty,” Otaru stated.

The family demanded clarification from the DSS regarding Yahaya’s status, calling for accountability from security agencies to prevent similar instances in the future.

The incident has spurred local outcry and added to the debate over the treatment of detainees and the need for lawful practices within Nigeria’s security agencies.
