Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha became an overnight social media sensation after his outstanding performance against Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup earned him more than one million new Instagram followers.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper delivered a series of crucial saves to help Cape Verde secure a historic 0-0 draw against Spain in the country’s first-ever World Cup match.
His remarkable display quickly captured the attention of football fans around the world. Commentators on Brazilian broadcaster Caze TV even urged viewers during halftime to help boost the veteran goalkeeper’s Instagram following to 100,000.
The response was immediate. Within minutes, Vozinha’s follower count jumped to 220,000 and continued to rise throughout the match.

By the 60th minute, the goalkeeper, who plays for GD Chaves, had reached 350,000 followers. At the final whistle, the figure stood at 389,000 before surging by another half a million in just five minutes.

The experienced goalkeeper, who received a match rating of 8.4 and made seven saves against Spain, was embraced by teammates after the final whistle and appeared emotional as he celebrated one of the greatest moments in Cape Verdean football history.
Speaking after the game, Vozinha revealed why the occasion meant so much to him.
“I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents when I was a kid, and they could not be there. They passed away a few years ago.

“My mum could not be here either because of a visa issue and the money required for it. We were unable to complete the process in time.”
During a post-match interview with Caze TV, the goalkeeper was informed of his extraordinary rise in popularity on social media.
“I had almost 50,000 followers before. Wow…”
When told he had already gained hundreds of thousands of followers, Vozinha appeared stunned.
Moments later, he was shown a phone displaying more than one million followers.
“That’s crazy.
“Thank you so much. Brazilians have always been very affectionate towards us.
“We felt that support during our qualification campaign, and we have continued to feel that affection from Brazilians.”
The incredible surge in followers capped a memorable night for Vozinha, whose heroics against Spain turned him into one of the breakout stars of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
