When Lies Catch Up: The rise and fall of Fiona Onasanya

Fiona Onasanya, name that resonates with the complexities of ambition, ethics, and the heavy price of dishonesty, serves as a stark reminder of the cost of deception—particularly for those in positions of leadership. Although born and raised in the UK, Onasanya’s Nigerian heritage and her rise to the British Parliament make her story particularly relevant to Nigeria, a country where the boundaries of integrity in leadership are often blurred.

Onasanya, a qualified lawyer and Member of Parliament, harbored an extraordinary ambition: to become the first black female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. However, this dream was abruptly cut short on a summer evening in July 2017, when her car was caught speeding in a 30mph zone in Cambridgeshire. Rather than admit her mistake, Onasanya chose to deceive, claiming her brother Festus was driving and even implicating a former lodger who was 1,800 miles away in Russia at the time.

This series of lies eventually led to her downfall. Found guilty of perverting the course of justice, Onasanya was sentenced to three months in prison, while her brother received a ten-month sentence for conspiracy. The Labour Party swiftly acted, removing her from her parliamentary seat.

But the consequences did not end there. The Solicitors Tribunal, the regulatory body for the legal profession in the UK, held a disciplinary hearing where Onasanya’s actions were further scrutinized. Despite maintaining her innocence, the tribunal found her guilty of acting without integrity and struck her off the roll of solicitors—a decisive move that ended her legal career.

For many Nigerians, the severity of Onasanya’s punishment might seem excessive, especially for what could be seen as a minor offense—a common reaction in a country where lying and evading consequences are often overlooked. However, Onasanya’s story underscores a crucial point: in societies where the rule of law prevails, integrity is non-negotiable, especially for leaders.
