Why El-Rufai shortened working days to 4, says it reflects lessons learned from COVID-19 pandemic

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has announced that from the 1st of December, 2021, the state will reduce its working days from 5 to 4. Under the new arrangement, civil servants will not go to work on Fridays.

Special adviser to the governor on media and communications, Muyiwa Adekeye disclosed this in a statement titled “Kaduna Begins Transition” to 4 days working week from 1st December 2021.

According to the statement which was read in parts, the measure also reflects lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic which required significant relaxations of old working traditions and the ascendency of virtual and remote working arrangements.

The move which will permit public servants to work from home for 1 day per week is a measure designed to boost productivity, improve work-life balance and enable workers to have more time for their families and to rest.

A statement from Sir Kashim Ibrahim House said that the state government will begin the implementation of the transitional arrangements in the public service of the state from 1st December 2021. From that date, working hours for public servants are adjusted to 8-5 pm from Monday to Friday.

However, all public servants in schools and health facilities will work on Fridays but this is also an interim arrangement.

Senior officials are to work on detailed guidelines to ensure that the emergency services, education and health system in the state continues to deliver 24-hour services in a day.
