Withheld salaries: NASU, SSANU declare nationwide strike

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities has announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning Monday. The strike comes in response to the government’s failure to pay four months of withheld salaries to its members.

JAC, which includes the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), issued a circular on Sunday to all branch chairmen in universities and inter-university centers. The circular, jointly signed by NASU General Secretary Mr. Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, was distributed from Abuja.

Titled “Latest Development in Respect of the Withheld Four Months Salaries,” the circular revealed that, despite President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval for 50% payment of the withheld salaries, no payments had been made. JAC expressed frustration with the government’s response, saying, “It is on record that JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of the government to our cause is in doubt.”

To enable branch officers to coordinate effectively, JAC has set the official strike commencement time for midnight on Sunday, October 27, 2024. The circular emphasized the unions’ resolve, stating, “We express our deepest appreciation for your steadfast commitment to the leadership, and we affirm our determination to persist in this struggle until ultimate victory is secured.”
