Woman reportedly dies after setting self ablaze in Bauchi

A woman in Bauchi State has reportedly died after self-immolation, in an incident that has prompted police investigation into the matter.

According to reports by Leadership Newspapers, she set her body on fire under circumstances that remain unclear, drawing the attention of neighbours and local authorities.

The incident occurred in a residential area of the state, where shocked residents rushed to her aid upon seeing the blaze.

Bystanders attempted to extinguish the flames and administer first aid, but the severity of the burns was said to be extensive.

She was swiftly taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), but medical staff declared her dead upon arrival, citing the critical nature of her injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest that a note was found at the scene, although its contents and relevance have not been disclosed.

Authorities are expected to review CCTV footage, interview witnesses, and trace her last movements for vital clues.

The state police command is coordinating with relevant departments to ensure that forensic and medical experts contribute to the probe.

According to Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Mohammed Wakil, preliminary investigations indicated that the woman had a history of mental illness, which reportedly developed after the birth of her last child.
