A 15-year-old boy has tragically lost his life in a drowning incident in Jigawa State, stirring grief in his community.

The deceased has been identified as Sunusi Abubakar, and his body was recovered from Mahayin Gidan Toro pond in Gabari village, located in Dutse Local Government Area.

His father, Abubakar Musa Gabari, told news outlets that Sunusi had gone to the pond to swim around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, but never returned home as expected.

Immediately, community members mobilised to search for him, and security agencies were contacted to assist in tracing his whereabouts.

According to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, the body was found at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, around 1.5 kilometres north of Gabari village.

The NSCDC’s spokesman, Assistant Superintendent Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, said that the boy’s shoes and trousers were discovered abandoned at the riverbank, but no external injuries were observed on his remains.

Mahmud confirmed that the body was handed over to the immediate family for burial in line with Islamic rites.

He urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to caution youths against unsupervised swimming, especially in open water bodies, to avert similar tragedies.

Authorities say preventive measures, including public awareness, better local oversight, and restricting access to dangerous ponds, must be prioritised to forestall further loss of life.
