2 Nigerian traders attempt suicide over $1 million capital loss in Ghana

Two Nigerian traders in Ghana are currently undergoing therapy after attempting suicide following the Ghanaian government’s imposition of a $1 million business equity on foreigners as well as other conditions.

The Chairman, Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, revealed this during a television interview on Monday.

Abike expressed displeasure that engagements with the Ghanaian authorities on the plight of Nigerian traders in the country haven’t achieved the desired results.

Recently, over 750 members of the Nigerian Union of Traders Association in Ghana presented a letter to the Federal Government requesting evacuation from the former Gold Coast.

The NIDCOM boss said the Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo; amongst others, were looking at the request of the Nigerian traders.

Abike, however, stressed that no tangible agreements can be reached until the Ghanaian presidential election scheduled for 7 December 2020 is concluded.
