Gov. Buni directs continuous distribution of relief items to Yobe flood victims (pictures)

Story by Kasim Isa MUHAMMAD, Damaturu

Governor Mai Mala Buni has intensified efforts to provide solace to flood victims in Yobe State through the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA).

The governor has directed the continuous distribution of food and non-food items to pre-registered flood victims in five local government areas: Geidam, Fune, Potiskum, Tarmuwa, and Nangere.

The initiative is part of a broader response to the devastating floods that have ravaged the state.

According to YOSEMA’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Goje, the governor’s directive aims to prioritise the most vulnerable groups, including displaced persons in camps, pregnant and lactating mothers, the elderly, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by the floods.

According to Dr. Goje, as of September 15, 2024, Yobe State has recorded approximately 55,488 individuals (22,742 households) affected by floods, resulting in 441 injuries and 39 fatalities.

He added that 33,881 shelters and 65 public facilities, including schools, healthcare centres, major roads, and bridges, have been damaged.

Relief efforts are underway, with Geidam, Potiskum, Fune, and Tarmuwa LGAs having received food and non-food items.

Neptune Prime gathered that in Nangere LGA, cash disbursement has commenced as stimulus disbursement to flood victims, with each household receiving financial aid.

The governor’s administration has received collaborative support from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Bank of Industry (BOI), and North-East Development Commission (NEDC). These organisations have provided additional resources, including tarpaulins, food basket combos, and non-food items to support vulnerable populations.

Items dispatched for immediate distribution include rice, pasta, noodles, masafloor, flour, vegetable oil, salt, sugar, seasonings, buckets, nylon mats, kettle, mosquito nets, bath soaps, washing soap, detergent, wax print, and blankets.

The Yobe State Government anticipates further support from other agencies in the coming days to continue addressing the needs of flood victims and vulnerable populations across the state.
