Tragedy in Maiduguri: 23 killed, over 100 injured in coordinated suicide bombings
The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that 23 people lost their lives while 108 others sustained injuries following multiple explosions that rocked Maiduguri on Monday evening.
Police said the attacks, which occurred around 7:24 p.m., were carried out by suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices, in what authorities believe to be coordinated assaults.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Nahum Kenneth Daso, preliminary investigations indicate that the bombings were strategically executed at crowded locations across the city.
The blasts hit key areas including Monday Market Maiduguri, the gate of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover Maiduguri.
Security forces, comprising police tactical teams, military personnel, and other agencies, were immediately deployed to the affected sites. The areas were secured and cordoned off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit conducted sweep operations to rule out further threats.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the scenes for an on-the-spot assessment and extended condolences to the victims and their families.
Emergency responders, including National Emergency Management Agency and Borno State Emergency Management Agency, evacuated the injured to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Authorities said calm has since been restored, with security heightened across the city to forestall further attacks. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining peace in the state.
