President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦68 billion in operational funding for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP), a move aimed at ensuring continued electricity supply in Maiduguri and its surrounding areas.
The intervention provides for a monthly allocation of ₦2 billion from March 2026 through December 2028 to cover the plant’s operational costs and address existing funding gaps.
Governor Babagana Zulum praised the decision, describing it as both timely and impactful for the people of Borno State. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, Zulum said the funding would play a key role in sustaining the plant’s operations and stabilizing electricity supply.
The Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant was originally established in 2021 as a federal intervention after insurgent attacks damaged critical power infrastructure, leaving the state without reliable electricity for nearly two years. It was later upgraded to a 50-megawatt capacity in December 2023.
Zulum noted that the improved power supply has already contributed to reviving economic activities, enhancing livelihoods, and supporting ongoing security efforts in the region.
The funding is expected to further strengthen electricity access, aiding recovery and development in an area long affected by infrastructure disruptions.
