2023: 17 presidential candidates jostle for Nigeria’s seat of power

The race for Nigeria’s seat of power has been set in motion after 17 registered political parties have put forward their best legs for next year’s presidential election which is 244 days away according to the date set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Last week Tuesday through Wednesday many witnessed the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the standard bearer of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and days before, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) put forward their old time favourite, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who has been vying for the president since 2011.

With the likes of Tinubu, Atiku and interestingly Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State whose defection from the PDP to the Labour Party (LP) days before the presidential primaries of the opposition party was to an extent turning to his favour among the teeming Nigerian youths on social media catching the ‘Peter OBIdient’ fever.

Also, not forgetting Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former governor of of Kano State.

Many columnists and political analysts have termed next year’s election – a make or mar for Nigeria which could be interpreted as – whoever emerges as president is presented with the opportunity to make things right or perform below expectation.

The electorates to a large extent are perhaps knowledgeable of the antecedents of the four familiar faces – Atiku Abubakar, Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi Rabiu Kwankwaso how they have fared in their previous leadership roles.

The 17 candidates in the alphabetical order of their party names are: Accord – Christopher Imumole; AA – Hamza Al Mustapha; AAC – Omoleye Sowore; ADC – Dumebi Kachikwu; ADP – Yabaji Sani; AP – Christopher Imumolen; APC — Bola Tinubu;APGA — Peter Umeadi; BP – Sunday Adenuga.

Others are: LP — Peter Obi; NNPP — Rabiu Kwankwaso; NRM – Okwudili Nwa-Anyajike; PDP —Atiku Abubakar; PRP – Kola Abiola; SDP – Adewole Adebayo; YPP – Malik Addo-Ibrahim; ZLP – Dan Nwanyawu.
