“We will aim at enhancing local content, cut cost of governance,” Hon. Kalu

Story from Hassan GIMBA

Honourable Benjamin Kalu, who represented himself and Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, both aiming to be Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives respectively, has assured that he and Honourable Abbas would galvanise the house into looking at various thematic angles to enhance local content production to boost employment, revenue and cut back on debts and cost of governance.

He gave these assurances in a parley with top editors and publishers of online newspapers in the nation’s capital on Tuesday.

Honourable Kalu disclosed this while answering a question posed by Malam Hassan Gimba, publisher of Neptune Prime, on why the executive, legislative and judicial arms of the government buy official vehicles from foreign countries instead of promoting and patronising locally manufactured or why the president, despite collecting humongous salary and allowances is being fed by the state.

On the question of how independent a legislature can be if its presiding officers are chosen by a president or a president-elect, the Deputy Speaker hopeful assured that that would not pose a problem because “all over the world, parties and stakeholders, guide who should be where for the party’s policies to be implemented.”

He, however, noted, “That is not ignoring the principles of checks and balances as well as the expectation of separation of powers.”
