Akin Osuntokun raises concerns over INEC’s handling of election funds, threatens legal action

The Labour Party has announced its intention to file a lawsuit against Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, citing allegations of an attempt to undermine the integrity of the 2023 election.

Akin Osuntokun, the director general of the Obidatti Campaign Council, emphasized that conducting an election without proper accountability for the funds received is a violation of Nigerian law.

During an interview with Channels TV, Osuntokun reiterated the need for INEC to provide a detailed explanation of the money it claimed to have spent. He highlighted that one of the key concerns to be addressed in court is the commission’s accountability for the alleged spending during the election.

“The INEC Chairman will face charges of sabotage in the 2023 election,” stated Osuntokun. “We have already emphasized the importance of holding them accountable for the funds they claim to have used. Misusing these funds is a crime, and if found guilty, they should face the full consequences of the law.

The majority of observers, including the general situation room observer of Nigeria, have reached the same conclusion regarding INEC’s alleged interference in the election.”

The allegations raise serious questions about INEC’s handling of financial resources and the potential impact on the electoral process. The Labour Party’s decision to pursue legal action highlights their commitment to upholding transparency and ensuring that those responsible for any wrongdoing face appropriate consequences.
