Man in court for killing six-year-old younger brother

Kingsley Bassey, a 23-year-old man, found himself in court this Monday as he was accused of allegedly causing the death of his six-year-old younger brother while under the influence of drugs. The incident took place on May 29, 2023, around 8:30 am at their residence located at No. 3, Poultry Road, Meiran, Lagos State.

Presented before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Kingsley Bassey faced a single count of murder. Prosecutor Thomas Nurudeen shared that the offense falls under Section 222 and is punishable according to Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The charge against Kingsley Bassey stated, “That you, Kingsley Bassey, on May 29, 2023, around 8:30 am at No. 3, Poultry Road, Meiran, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one six-year-old (name withheld) by hitting his head on the ground and thereby, committed an offense contrary to Section 222 and punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.”

Though the defendant’s plea was not taken during the court session, Prosecutor Nurudeen requested that Kingsley Bassey be remanded in the Kirikiri Custodial Centre while awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Granting the request, Magistrate Patrick Nwaka ordered the defendant’s remand in the Kirikiri Custodial Centre. The case has been adjourned until August 21, 2023.
