FG to pay N100m as compensation for violating Emefiele’s rights

In a significant legal development, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, has ruled that the Federal Government must pay a compensation of ₦100 million to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The judgment stems from a human rights suit where the court declared Emefiele’s prolonged detention without trial a blatant violation of his fundamental rights. Additionally, the court issued a restraining order preventing the Federal Government and its agents from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without a proper court order.

This verdict follows Emefiele’s arrest on June 10, 2023, shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu. In his suit, Emefiele sought ₦1 billion in damages and an injunction against any future arrests or detentions without proper legal procedures.
