Heavy military presence in Abuja over planned protest

Commuters were stranded at the Keffi-Abuja expressway on Monday after military officers barricaded the highway to conduct a stop-and-search operation on vehicles entering the nation’s capital.

The soldiers mounted a road block at Sani Abacha barracks before the popular AYA roundabout.

There was no prior notice given regarding the blockade that has caused a gridlock extending as far as Nyanya Bridge, more than 12 kilometres from the checkpoint.

Civil servants and traders who work in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and live in places like Nyanya, Karu, Maraba and Masaka were stranded.

After hours of standstill, many of them were forced to return home.

This development follows announcement of a planned nationwide protest scheduled to commence on August 1st in all states of the federation, including the FCT.

The protest, tagged #EndbadGovernance and championed by the youths, is to show displeasure over the current hardship, hunger and bad governance in the country.
