Police intercept driver attempting to smuggle 6 Nigerian ladies out of Libya

A suspected human trafficker from Libya, along with six female migrants from Nigeria, have been arrested while attempting to smuggle the ladies out of the country.

The Migrant Rescue Watch, an international body that reports activities of migrants who attempt to cross into Europe through the Mediterranean Sea via Libya, disclosed this on its X handle on Tuesday, saying the driver and the ladies were arrested last week.

According to the report, a police patrol team arrested the driver in Bishr, a Mediterranean coastal town in the North-Eastern part of Libya, while he was attempting to smuggle the six undocumented female migrants of Nigerian nationality.

The six female Nigerians have been remanded in police custody in the country.

The Migrant Rescue Watch added that during interrogation, the driver claimed that the six female passengers were members of his family, but a further interrogation revealed that while he is a Libyan citizen, the six ladies, who wore veils, were actually Nigerians.

It wrote, “Police patrols arrested in Bishr area, a Libyan driver for an attempted smuggling of six undocumented female migrants of Nigerian nationality. The driver claimed that the female passengers were his family. All transferred to Bishr Police Department for legal action.”

There are media reports that many Nigerians who attempted to get to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea ended up in Libya while some of them, especially ladies, were subjected to exploitation and non-dignifying jobs in the North African countries.
