Chelsea’s Maresca, vows to close gap on champions Man City
Chelsea’s newly appointed manager, Enzo Maresca, has expressed confidence that his team will soon challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.
The Italian coach, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City this summer, is the club’s sixth manager since Todd Boehly’s consortium took over in 2022.
Maresca acknowledged the significant gap between Chelsea and Manchester City last season, with the Blues finishing 28 points behind the champions.
However, he believes that with time, his expensively assembled squad will be able to compete at the highest level.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s season opener against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, Maresca highlighted the importance of stability and time in building a competitive team.
“The big difference at the moment between us and the teams dominating English football is just a matter of time,” he said. “With time, we are going to close the gap. Hopefully, it can happen very soon.”
Chelsea has undergone significant changes this summer, with the club spending £185 million on 10 new players, bringing the total number of players in the squad to 43.

Despite the upheaval, Maresca is optimistic about the team’s progress and believes they are improving with each game.
In addition, Maresca provided an update on Conor Gallagher, who has been training separately from the squad amid ongoing transfer negotiations with Atletico Madrid.
The 24-year-old midfielder will not be involved in the match against Manchester City as his future remains uncertain.
As Chelsea prepares to face the reigning champions, Maresca is focused on building a team that can eventually compete with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League.
