Big flood disaster to hit Niger, Benue rivers, FG warns

As Nigeria deals with severe flooding in Maiduguri and other regions, the Federal Government has issued an urgent alert about potential flooding along the Niger and Benue rivers. Prof. Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, announced the warning during a press briefing in Abuja, highlighting the increased flow of water from these rivers towards the Niger Delta.
The recent floods in Maiduguri and Jere, Borno State, were attributed to the overflow from Alau Dam, caused by a significant inflow from Ngadda River, a major tributary of River Yedzaram. Prof. Utsev noted that the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency’s 2024 Annual Flood Outlook had identified several states, including Borno, as high-risk areas.
In response to the disaster, which has resulted in over 30 deaths and displaced more than 400 people, the Federal Government is conducting an assessment of Alau Dam and the surrounding areas. Utsev emphasised the need for vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate further flooding, particularly in southern Nigeria.

The flooding has been linked to climate change and prolonged heavy rainfall. Despite earlier reports, the Alau Dam did not collapse. The government plans to upgrade the dam and enforce strict sanctions on contractors or officials failing to meet performance standards.
The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of 11 bodies from various flood-affected areas. The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has urged the government to take decisive action to prevent future floods. The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has warned facilities to comply with environmental laws to avoid sanctions.
In efforts to address flooding issues, the Federal Government has begun dredging the Ogun River to prevent recurring floods in Lagos State’s Isheri to Ikorodu axis.
