Fire service identifies cause of fire at Kano’s kantin kwari market
The Kano State Fire Service has attributed a recent fire at the renowned Kantin Kwari Market to a fault in a solar electricity system. The fire, which erupted around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday after evening prayers, completely destroyed two shops and partially affected 13 others, resulting in damages worth millions of naira.
The fire began at Gidan Inuwa Maimai on Bayajidda Street, spreading to nearby shops. Quick action from the market’s fire service contained the blaze, preventing further damage. Shamsuddini Gambo, a trader, credited the swift response for limiting the destruction.
Bashir Alhassan, one of the affected shop owners, stated, “Only two shops were completely destroyed, but around 13 others, including mine, were partially damaged by water used in the firefighting efforts. Alhaji Zayyanu and Alhaji Tahir’s shops bore the brunt of the damage.”

Attempted Looting Thwarted
As the fire continued, hoodlums reportedly attempted to loot goods from affected shops. However, police intervened and dispersed the would-be looters. Alhassan expressed relief, noting, “The police managed to overpower them and stop the looting.”
Market Union Pledges Preventative Measures
The Kantin Kwari Market Union, through its Public Relations Officer Anas Muhammad Zango, extended sympathies to those affected and outlined measures to prevent future incidents. Zango mentioned that the union will enforce the relocation of gas cylinders and generators outside the market premises to enhance safety.
Solar System Fault Confirmed
Saminu Yusuf, spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, confirmed the fire’s origin was linked to a solar power fault. He noted that public electricity was not active at the time, making it easier to trace the cause. According to Yusuf, while 13 shops were impacted, most shop owners managed to save their goods.
The market union is urging traders to cooperate with the police and fire services to ensure a safer environment, with efforts underway to minimise future fire risks in the bustling marketplace.
